It only took one.
I was sixteen years a pet expert. I grew up surrounded by cats and dogs, fifteen guinea pigs, ten parakeets, twenty-some box turtles and a gerbil named Treego... so I was quite accustomed to wearing feathers and fur. But a ferret, what was that? Long, stinky rats was all I thought of such critters back then. My opinion changed, of course, that dark and windy night one came scratching at my front door.
Bandit Houdini had chewed through the screen window of her playroom and ventured two blocks east to my house at the end of a cul-de-sac. My dogs sniffed at the door, whimpering and wagging their tails with an incessancy my family could not ignore. Unable to see anything through the peephole, we cautiously opened the door. In popped the weasel! Bandit was the sweetest, friendliest, most trusting little critter. She was the most fearless and playful bouncing ball of fur. Dook dook dook! she teased our mutts, spinning circles around them, laughing, Catch me if you can! Then she found my lap, curled into a ball, and fell asleep.
And thus my heart was stolen. In short, here is what followed:
